Services / Tree planting
A tree is a long-term investment. We help you pick the right tree for the space, plant it the way it needs to be planted and make sure it gets through the first two years, when most new trees are lost.
Most planting problems begin before the hole is dug: a tree that will grow too wide for the space, roots that will lift paving, or a species that can’t handle the soil or shade. We look at all of that first.
We’ll recommend a few suitable options with their mature height and spread, how quickly they grow and what they give you, whether that’s shade, privacy, blossom, fruit or autumn colour.
Six steps that give a young tree its best chance of becoming a healthy, mature one.
01
We check for underground services, measure the space and test drainage where the tree will go.
02
A wide, shallow planting pit is dug and the sides loosened so roots can spread easily.
03
The root flare sits at soil level. Planting too deep is one of the most common reasons young trees fail.
04
A low stake and tie support the tree, with guards fitted where animals or mowers could cause damage.
05
A thorough first watering, then a ring of mulch to hold moisture and keep grass away from the trunk.
06
You receive a simple watering and checking schedule for the first two years, or we can handle it for you.
Beyond single specimen trees, we plant hedging rows for privacy, shade trees for hot patios, fruit trees for small gardens and mixed native planting that brings in birds and pollinators.
For larger planting projects such as office grounds, residential compounds or schools, we can phase the work over a season and include watering visits in the quote.
Still unsure? A gardener will happily answer by phone or email.
Planting is most successful when the weather is mild and the soil is moist, which reduces stress on the roots. We’ll advise on timing for the species you choose and can plant container-grown trees for much of the year with extra watering.
Yes. We source healthy, well-rooted trees from trusted nurseries and check each one before planting. You’re also welcome to supply your own and we’ll inspect it first.
We plant everything from young whips for hedging to larger semi-mature trees. Bigger trees establish more slowly and need more aftercare, so we’ll talk through the trade-offs.
If a tree we supplied and planted fails in its first year and the aftercare plan was followed, we’ll replace it. Details are in our refund and cancellation policy.
Tell us about the space and we’ll suggest trees that will thrive there.
